BIM Symposium
Wednesday, November 19
This is one-day symposium explores the business and practice of Building Information Modeling. Sponsored by the
BSA’s BIM Roundtable.
B02 BIM Symposium Breakfast and keynote: The Future of BIM Performance
8:30 - 10:00am
Join us for breakfast to start this day-long BIM Symposium. Our keynote speaker for "The Future of BIM Performance" is Dominic Gallello, CEO Graphisoft (current), former VP Autodesk Asia,
former EVP Autodesk Solutions Group and former EVP at Macromedia.
One of the biggest issues facing architectural firms who design large
and complex buildings is performance. Dominic Gallello will present the
case that there will be more hardware and software technical innovation
that architects can take advantage of in the coming 12 months, than what
has been available in the past 10 years. This session is for principals,
BIM Managers and architects responsible for executing large and complex
projects, especially where design teams are scattered across the office,
across the country or across the world.
B20 Extending your practice through BIM: marketing and additional
services 10:30am – noon
With evolving changes in process, increases in pre-construction services, and a new array of tools and capabilities in
your firm, changes in service offerings and marketing will lead you to the next level. Some of these changes may cause
a decrease in your firm’s previously offered services, but some changes open new and interesting opportunities. We
cover a range of topics, including: what these changes are and how they affect your current service offering; what
additional types of services you can offer; and how the BIM process and tools can help you market your firm
successfully.
B49 Beyond the firm: collaboration, consultants, and integrated practice
1:30 - 3:00pm
We use case studies to examine real-world examples of BIM collaboration, integrated practice, and the roles of
consultants. What are the areas of practice where collaboration is being used? What are the realities today of
successful collaboration with BIM models? What are the benefits to the architect, consultant, contractor, and owner?
We answer these questions and more in this practical session.
B69 BIM implementation: social and process changes
4:00 - 5:30pm
BIM brings with it changes to the processes firms use in the design and production of architectural projects. However,
equally important are the changes brought about by BIM that affect how we collaborate with colleagues outside and
within our own firm. We address several central topics including: the key process changes that can be expected in your
firm; the social changes brought on by increased need for collaboration; the impacts on your schedule, team structure,
and fees; and how institutions are preparing students for this environment change.
B89 BIM and the firm: past, present, and future
6:30 - 8:00pm
We explore BIM in projects of the past, present, and future. The past was about object-based design which didn’t come
to fruition. When, if ever, will model-based delivery catch on? Using case studies of current and future projects, we
address several topics, including: how firms currently focus on the connection of the visualization model to
documentation; how BIM may affect the way builders and designers work together; how owners’ expectations are changing
– whether time and money are the driving factors; how building life-cycle issues, such as sustainable design, may
drive the change; and the realignment of roles.
The package cost for the symposium is $325 if you register before October 24 and $365 if you
register after that date (this is a significant savings over the individual workshop costs). However, you may choose
to register for one or more individual sessions by selecting the individual workshops in the a la carte section of the
online
registration site or under section 3 on the paper registration form.
